Marlins Overcome Curse Of Jamie Moyer, Umpires

Hey, Bud Selig. Let’s put aside for a moment your ingenious decision to allow the results of an exhibition game decide home field advantage in the World Series. We’ll ignore your handling of that little steroid thing. But how ’bout you jump on the technology bandwagon like every other sport and maybe think about using some instant replay. I could see how you would be skeptical, what with the possibility of getting some calls right and everything, but are you waiting for something like this to happen in the post season before you change this? Jackass.

The Marlins left 146 runners stranded in the first 3 innings, but were somehow still leading 4-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th. That’s when, with 2 outs and a runner on, Shane Victorino hit a 2-run foul ball home run over the left field fence. Jorge Cantu, who had a clear view of the ball the entire time, pleaded his case, but after a brief discussion by the umpires, the home run was left on the board, and the Marlins lead was cut in half.

(Side note: Why have a discussion? Without replay, what the hell are they discussing? Is the umpire in right field going to convince the umpire at the left field wall, 6 feet away from the play, that he was wrong? It’s asinine.)

No matter. Two innings and 4 runs later, and the Marlins were in the win column with an 8-2 stomping of the division leading Phillies.

As for Jamie Moyer’s stranglehold on the Fish? Yea, not so much tonight. He gets the loss after having a difficult time locating the plate for 5 innings. (They say the eyes are the first thing to go.) Josh Johnson earned the win tonight, as the Marlins move to 5-0 on days when he pitches. Not a bad stat to see in the books entering the last two months of the season.

To the fine folks over at Underground Baseball League, we offer these words: HA!

Seriously, though. This should be a fun race down the stretch for the NL East. It’s good to have someone to go back and forth with through it all.

Tomorrow night, Philly throws out Kyle Kendrick. The Marlins counter with Anibal Sanchez. And Bud Selig’s voicemail is gonna have some angry messages on it in the morning.

What? You’ll have to speak up, Sonny.

  2. He had forgotten to take his Centrum Silver last night . . . Between both teams there were 22 runners LOB. That’s bad baseball no matter how you look at it. Those damn Mets won again ! Would someone feed Tatis another burger so, he is no longer able to move !!

  3. It was bound to end for Moyer. He had no control last night.

The Phillies offense is pathetic and has been for sometime. They usually have one big inning in a series but that is about it. Last year 1-8 the lineup was solid. This year after Burrell bats the lineup is a black hole.

Marlins have a real chance, as a Phils fan I think they have a better chance to win the division than the Mets.
