When Stupid People Become, Well, Stupid…er.

This story made the rounds over the weekend, but we’re just getting around to it now. On Saturday, Ivonne Hernandez, a 43-year old Yankees fan, exchanged words with a group of Red Sox fans outside of a bar. Hernandez, being of sound body and mind, handled these taunts about her baseball allegiances the way you would expect any responsible adult to handle them — she ran the group down with her car.
The woman, Ivonne Hernandez of Nashua, had allegedly been drinking and was charged with reckless conduct, aggravated drunken driving, and second-degree murder. She was arraigned in Nashua District Court this morning on charges she used her car to kill Matthew Beaudoin, 29, of Nashua, who died Saturday of head trauma at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington.
I know this is a Marlins site, and this might not have anything to do with the Fish, but seriously? There’s a reason nobody likes Yankees fans. Or soccer hooligans. Or little league coaches/parents that take these games way too seriously. This should be a strong reminder that sports are entertainment. They’re games meant to distract you from your everyday life. Have fun. Get excited. Even shed a tear when your team gets knocked out of the playoffs. But when sports leads you to depression or anger, maybe it’s time to reevaluate your life.
At any rate, there’s a touching movement to honor the victim of this ridiculous incident (which you can find right here). In times like this, I would encourage you to show your support for Red Sox nation (or any other fan base, for that matter) by going ahead and adding your name to the movement they have going on over there.
Sometimes there are more important things in life than sports. It’s just too bad some people don’t realize that.
(I don’t care that she was drunk, either. I’ve been drunk for at least 35% of my legal life and I can’t remember a single time where Sam Adams led me to kill someone. Maybe I’m in the minority, though.)
